Frequently Asked Questions About Coding Classes for Kids in Singapore

Why should kids take coding classes?

Coding classes help children develop essential future-ready skills, including problem-solving, logical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy. Learning to code also builds confidence, structured thinking and prepares students for technology-enabled learning pathways, including robotics, AI, and computing-related subjects.

What do kids learn in coding classes?

In coding classes for kids, children learn foundational technology skills and problem-solving habits. Most programmes cover:

  • Programming fundamentals, including logic, sequencing, loops, and conditionals

  • Computational thinking, where children break problems into smaller steps and plan solutions logically

  • Creative projects, such as building games, animations, and interactive stories using beginner-friendly tools

  • Debugging and problem-solving, teaching children how to test ideas, fix errors, and improve their work

As they progress, many coding classes also introduce Python, web development, app creation, or robotics, helping children apply coding skills to real-world projects with confidence.

How do I choose the right coding classes for my child?

  • Your child’s age and learning style

Choose a coding class that matches both your child’s age and how they learn best.
Younger children often benefit from visual, hands-on activities that use block-based coding and guided exploration. Older children and teens may prefer structured lessons, real-world projects, or text-based programming.

  • The Curriculum focus

Different coding and robotics programmes emphasise different outcomes.
Some focus on game design and creativity, while others prioritise robotics, Python programming, web development, or introductory AI concepts. Choose a curriculum that aligns with your child’s interests and long-term goals. Interest-driven learning increases motivation and helps children stay engaged over time.

  • Class size and instructor experience

Smaller class sizes allow instructors to give children more individual attention and feedback. Experienced instructors can adapt lessons to different learning speeds and explain complex ideas in age-appropriate ways.

  • Availability of Trial classes or Holiday bootcamps

Trial classes and Holiday bootcamps allow parents and children to assess whether the class is a good fit before making a long-term commitment. These sessions help evaluate teaching style, lesson pace, and your child’s interest level.

Why The Young Maker Coding & Robotics Programmes?

Who is The Young Maker (TYM)?

The founders and teachers of TYM are a team of computer science-trained engineers based in Singapore and the USA. They established TYM to make coding education more meaningful and innovative. TYM operates both physical classrooms and an online gamified platform called CodeMaker, designed to revolutionise coding education.

TYM offers courses for children and teenagers from 4 to 18 years old.

TYM has a proprietary curriculum covering two tracks: coding/rogramming and robotics. Each new module is accompanied by a module-specific book, developed by TYM, to guide students in their learning journey.

The Direct School Admission (DSA) track trains students in both coding/programming and robotics, preparing a comprehensive portfolio that includes competitive projects. TYM has successfully placed students in their schools of choice every year.

Each lesson typically lasts between 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the course.

No make-up classes or refunds are provided for absences or lateness. However, absences with a medical certificate may qualify for make-up classes, subject to availability.

Every child receives regular reports detailing their lessons learned and performance. Parents can also stay informed through end-of-module presentations that showcase the students’ achievements.
