Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) has made Artificial Intelligence literacy a national priority. The goal: move AI in primary school from a specialist enrichment topic to something every student understands by the time they leave Primary 6. The Young Maker — Singapore's coding school for hands-on AI and computational thinking — taught it at scale through the SHHK Thinkers Programme.
Held at Nan Chiau Primary School, the programme brought together 300 Primary school students from five schools in the Hokkien Huay Kuan family for a fully hands-on Artificial Intelligence experience.
What the Initiative Actually Looked Like
Students worked directly with real AI tools across the programme — training their own models and watching those models respond in real time.
Foundations of Artificial Intelligence
Students unpacked the difference between traditional rule-based programming and machine learning — where a system learns its own rules from data instead of being explicitly coded by a human.
How Neural Networks Learn from Data
Students got a first look at how a neural network turns labelled examples into a working model — adjusting itself with every piece of training data until it can recognise patterns on its own.
The Train–Test–Iterate Workflow
Every model students built went through the same cycle real machine learning engineers use: collect data, train, test for accuracy, spot where it fails, and retrain to improve.
Data Quality & Model Accuracy
Students learned why a model is only as good as its training data — testing their own models against edge cases, measuring accuracy, and diagnosing why misclassifications happen.
Why This Initiative Matters
Part of a National Push, Not a One-Off Event
This initiative sits inside a much bigger shift in Singapore education policy. As part of Singapore's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and its "Transforming Education through Technology" Masterplan 2030, MOE has committed to helping students "learn about AI, learn to use AI, learn with AI and learn beyond AI" — an approach MOE positions as tied to each student's age and stage of development, rather than a one-size-fits-all rollout.
That policy is already reshaping the primary curriculum directly. The Code for Fun programme — mandatory for all upper primary students since 2020 — has been offering block-based "AI for Fun" modules to every primary and secondary school since 2025, and MOE has confirmed it will be updated to strengthen students' AI skills and rolled out to all schools by 2027. Separately, MOE has stated that students begin learning about AI from lower primary, and from Primary 4 are introduced to using AI under teacher supervision.
